Blog
Wednesday, Aug. 1
It is time to change the calendar again as we head into August. This summer has
flown by. I hope everyone has been enjoying my blogs and seeing the different
things we encounter on the road.
After returning from Calgary it was back to the PRCA rodeos. I had planned to
compete in both Nampa, Idaho, and Salinas, Calif. Unfortunately, we got up at
the same time at these rodeos so Bradley and my brother, Heith, called and
called to see if we could get traded with some other guys for Salinas. They were
able to find two people to trade so I had to turn-out of Salinas since we
couldn't find a third.
So while Bradley and Heith headed to Salinas, I spent some time at home with my
wife and daughter. It is always nice to get home even if only for a few days. I
met Bradley and Heith in Nampa on Saturday, July 21. I finished third in the
first round with a score of 83 points and Bradley tied for sixth with a score of
79. In the Tour Round, I was second with an 84 behind reigning world champion
Chad Ferley who won the round with an 88-point ride. Chad won the average with a
two head score of 174 points and I was second with 167. I had a good payday
picking up $9,325 in Nampa.
My brother, Heith, had a great showing in Salinas winning the rodeo with a two
head score of 167 points and picked up checks totaling $7,497. He was pretty
proud of that win, as that is a rodeo I have yet to win, and the buckle is among
the nicest in the PRCA. Since I wasn't able to make it, I was glad that at least
one DeMoss got the win.
After Salinas, we had a couple busy days. We had our first ones in Cheyenne on
Monday afternoon (July 23) and then we were in Spanish Fork, Utah, that night.
So we rode in Cheyenne then flew to Spanish Fork, then flew back for our second
in Cheyenne on the 24th and back to Ogden, Utah that night. When it was all said
and done, I am not sure it was worth it for me as I didn’t have much luck at any
of them. I was able to get $175 out of Ogden after finishing tied for eighth
with an 83-point ride.
Heith carried his momentum from Salinas right into Cheyenne and finished in a
tie for second in the average with 245 points on three head. He didn't place in
the first round but was second in the second round with an 86-point ride and
tied for the win in the short round with another 86 on Harry Vold Rodeo's Jumpin
Jack. Taos Muncy won Cheyenne with a total of 249 points.
I had a little better luck in Deadwood (S.D.) finishing second with an 84-point
ride. I picked up a check worth $5,910. The past couple days have been spent up
in the mountains with another saddle bronc rider, Mo Forbes. We are up in Great
Falls, Mont., tonight and then Dodge City (Kan.), Phillipsburg (Kan.) and Idaho
Falls, Idaho. From there the plan is to go to Strathmore (Alberta, Canada),
Sikeston (Mo.), Lawton (Okla.) and Hermiston (Ore.) before competing at the
first Ariat Playoff of the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour in Caldwell, Idaho, Aug.
14-18.
Dodge City is the last stop on the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour before the Playoff in
Caldwell. I am currently fifth in the Tour standings with $30,376, so no matter
what I do at the last stop I am guaranteed a spot in in Caldwell. From there the
top 22 in the Tour standings plus the Caldwell champion and the DNCFR (Dodge
National Circuit Finals Rodeo) champion will qualify for the second Ariat
Playoff in Puyallup, Sept. 7-9. Bradley is 11th in the Tour standings with
$18,730 and Heith is 24th with $10,467, so we will all be in Caldwell and then
we will see from there.
Keep checking for more updates on how the Road to Dallas is treating all of us.
Until next time,
Cody
